Can a buried oil tank be filled with sand and left in the ground?

Abandonment in place is allowed only when removal is genuinely not feasible, and it is a worse outcome than removal for a homeowner who plans to sell. Filling a tank with sand or foam leaves the shell, the fuel line and any contaminated soil beneath it on the property, and the eventual buyer's lawyer still has to disclose it. How do I know if there is a buried oil tank on my property?

Look for a fill pipe or vent pipe sticking out of the ground or out of the exterior wall near the foundation, and for a pair of capped copper lines entering the basement. Those are the reliable surface signs. Budget the removal as its own line rather than assuming a rebate absorbs it.
